Your first treatment will usually last for 45 minutes. Firstly your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your problem, together with any relevant past medical history. Next, they will undertake a physical assessment – this will help determine the clinical diagnosis of your problem. The physiotherapist will then explain a proposed treatment plan (and tell you how long your treatment is likely to last), as well as what sort of outcome you can expect. You will probably be given some “homework” in the form of exercises to carry out before your next treatment (should a follow-up session be recommended).

Follow-up treatments will normally be around 30 minutes long. Remember, you can always ask questions about your condition and advice regarding its management and prevention in the future.

You should wear loose fitting clothing which enables your physiotherapist to see and access the area they are treating – do ask if you are not sure what is appropriate for your session. You would be most welcome to bring a friend or relative to your consultation should you wish to do so.
